Guide to Rec Room for Parents & Families

About Rec Room

Rec Room is a free game where players can create and play games with friends. We provide features and tools for parents and guardians of younger players to customize their child's experience in-game. We've created this guide to help navigate through the safety features and tools.

Rec Room is a member of the kidSAFE Seal Program and has obtained the kidSAFE+ COPPA-CERTIFIED Seal for meeting certain privacy and safety standards.

Rec Room is also a member of the Tech Coalition where we work with our partners to keep children safe online. Read more about our partnership here.

Getting Started with Junior & Parent Accounts

Rec Room has Junior and Non-Junior accounts. Junior accounts provide extra protections for players under 13. To create an account for a player under 13, download and open Rec Room. Create a new account and enter the child’s birthday so we can ensure they get access to the right account. The age and birthday of your child will not be visible to others.

Junior accounts are specifically designed to protect players under the age of 13. The following features are automatically in place when a junior account is created:

  • Voice and text chat are disabled

  • Usernames are automatically generated to prevent your child from sharing personal information

  • Community-created content tagged as 13+ is inaccessible. This might include rooms that contain more realistic gore or scares

Note: Junior accounts are not accessible for players under 10 using Meta Quest devices due to Meta policies. See Meta Policies on Junior Accounts for more information.

Parent Accounts

Junior accounts can be linked to a parent account to give you more control over your child’s account. Parent accounts can be used to control your child’s password and disable in-app purchases at https://rec.net/settings/juniors. A parent account is required for a Junior player to reset their password.

To link a parent account to a junior account, log into the junior account, open the watch, click the profile button on the bottom right, navigate to Edit Profile > Account Settings, click “Set” next to “Register Email”, and enter your email address. Follow the instructions in the email you receive to finish linking your account.

Note: Multiple Junior accounts can be linked to a single parent account if you have more than one child.

Teens

Junior accounts will automatically convert to a Non-Junior account when a player turns 13, based on the date of birth provided during account creation. Non-Juniors have access to more features including voice and text chat and content rated 13+ (by the creator).

Voice & Text Chat

We leverage real-time voice moderation technology to detect and automatically act if a player is repeatedly breaking our Code of Conduct. You can learn more about how we make voice chat safe and how we handle violations in our State of Voice Moderation blog.

We take a similar approach to moderating text chat. We automatically filter profanities in areas where chat is publicly visible. Players 13+ can send direct messages to friends they have accepted onto their friend list in Rec Room. Players can choose to further restrict who sends them messages (friends, favorites, no one) and can report messages to us by hovering over them and clicking the report icon.

Safety & Moderation

We want Rec Room to be a positive and fun place to create and play online. We take that mission seriously, and created these guidelines and safety features to keep our community safe and secure:

Terms of Service

Our Terms of Service outline the rules for using and accessing Rec Room. All players must agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to create an account and play. Our terms may be updated as required. If they are, players will receive an in-game notification.

Code of Conduct

Our Code of Conduct establishes our basic requirements for player interaction to ensure all players are safe and welcome in Rec Room. All players are expected to follow our Code of Conduct. Ignoring or violating the Code of Conduct may result in an account ban, loss of content, or the removal of access to certain features.

Creator Code of Conduct

In addition to our Code of Conduct, creators are responsible for ensuring that their creations abide by our Creator Code of Conduct. We use machine learning and specialist moderators to review content created by our players, including rooms, inventions, and custom avatar items. Creators who break the Creator Code of Conduct may have their creations removed, lose access to our creation tools, or face account bans.

Reporting Players or Content

We aim to stop content that breaks our rules from ever making it into Rec Room. If players find community-created content that violates our Codes of Conduct, they can use our reporting functions. Follow the reporting instructions below:

  1. Click on the room, invention, or custom avatar item violating our guidelines

  2. Click the report button

  3. Fill in the details, and submit the report

Our systems will escalate reports to our team for review in priority order. Our team will action content appropriately following an investigation.

REPORTING Players

  1. Navigate to the player’s profile

  2. Click “Report”

  3. Click “Report” again to access the report form

  4. Fill in the details, and submit the report

Our systems will escalate reports to our team for review in priority order. Our team will action players appropriately following an investigation.

Blocking & Muting Players

You or your child can block or mute other players negatively impacting your experience. Blocking a player makes their avatar disappear and mutes their audio. Our matchmaking system will also try to avoid sending you to a room instance with a player you’ve blocked.

Muting another player will prevent you from hearing their voice audio, but their avatar will still be visible.

To mute or block a player:

  1. Navigate to the player’s profile page

  2. Click “Block” or “Mute”

Other Safety Settings

  • Direct Message Settings – Control who can send messages. This option is only available for Non-Junior accounts as Junior accounts cannot send messages.

  • Voice Privacy Settings – Control who can hear you and who you can hear. Navigate to Settings > Audio > and adjust microphone and voice privacy settings. These options are only available for Non-Junior accounts as Junior accounts cannot access voice chat.

  • Ignore Bubble – Other players’ avatars will fade out if they get too close to your avatar. Turn this option on or off by going to Settings > Experience > and toggling “Ignore Bubble” under the Safety section.
